COMMEMORATIVE COLUMBIA DRINKWARE

US Open 100 - white background_FINAL.png

One hundred years ago, Columbia hosted the National Open. Over the past year, The Columbia Foundation has devoted considerable time to collecting and preserving the history of this significant event hosted at our golf course.  The original U.S. Open medal awarded to Jim Barnes, now known as the Jack Nicklaus Medal, was the Foundation’s inspiration for a unique commemorative design to mark Columbia's centenary of hosting this golf major event.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Edward J. Hickey Jr., began developing the concept of an official crest for Columbia.  Following the tradition of European clubs, a seal could be used whenever possible, mostly on Club supplies and the President's jacket.  When Ed Hickey became Club President in 1965, he assigned the task of designing a coat of arms to an expert in the field of heraldry.  Hickey wanted Columbia's crest to be distinctive.  After two years of research, the Board approved a crest of gold, silver and red on a navy blue background.  Colonel Harry Temple, an artist at the Pentagon, rendered the final drawing.
